PER S.S. " AIREDALE" TO SYDNEY.
Independent Office, : Wednesday, 9 a.m. The Airedale arrived iv Wellington harbor last night, at 9 o'clock, from Lyitelton aud Otago, and shortly afterwards the Queen arrived in port from Napier and Auckland* We are thus in possession of our usual files to the following dates, viz: — Auckland, 6ib February, Napier, 9th, Lyttelton, 7th, Otago, 7th, from which we summarise the following intelligence : AUCKLAND. There is no fresh political intelligence of importance. The Provincial Council has adjourned to the 24th February, at the request of tbe Superintendent, in order to give the new Government time for the preparation of certain " measures having reference to Immigration, Roads, -Public Works, and other matters of great im- . tance." ' The Albert Land Settlement scheme has proved a partial failure, through private aud peisonal differences of its leaders, and tbe site of the City of Albertland has been offered for ■ sale by auction. A lew only of the allotments could be offered in consequence of an oversight in the laying out of the township ; those which were offered, however, sold readily, and tho sura of nearly £1000 was realised. The total of ordinary revenue of Auckland for the year was £388,887 ls 3d, of wliich sum the ou'stums furnished about £340,000. The general ordinary revenue of the Province of Auckland was £86,601 14s ld, of which, after deducting our share of the expenditure incurred by the central government, there remains £36,960 103 stl, surplus belonging to the Province, The Auckland Volunteer Fire Brigade is disbanded, as neither the Provincial Government, the City Board, or the Auckland Insurance Compauies, except the New Zealaud Co., would subscribe for its support. The bint of the Colouial Secretary, that Volunteer corps should be re-established, does not appear to have mcl with a very enthusiastic response. The previously existing corps bad almost dwindled away. The Coromandel gold-fields are quiet. There is no intelligence or even speculation relative to !?ir George Prey's movements. The second exhibition of the Auckland Horticultural Show took place on the 29tb, and though too lata in the season for flowers, and too early for frui.t, was nevertheless a great success. The Regatta took place the same day, which was held as a geteral festival, being in fact the anniversary of the foundation of the Colony. Fetes were also held at the Takapuna Lake on the North Shore, and that day and the next were given up to amusement. On the 27th, the Otahuhu luslilute was opened with a soiree, and tenders for a public hall at Mahu-' rangi are now called for. The barque Novelty, built by Mr Henry Nichol, left Auckland for Sydney on Ist Feb. She is a very handsome vessel, and has accommodation fqrJ>.etw-eon ao and 40 passengers. Johnston, the murderer of Von Arsdale at Wangaroa, has been committed to take his trial ut the sittings of the Supreme Court in March.
