SHIPPING MEMS FOR JANUARY:
Fikb on Board the s. s. Queen.-— On Sunday morning, at 3 o'clock, a fire broke out on board the Queen when off Flat Point, exactly opposite the wreck of the White Swan. It would seem that one of the passengers had thrown a lighted match down the forehold, which had ignited some loose hay and canvas. Fortunately the smoke led to the discovery of the fire in time, otherwise the consequences might have been very serious. —Independent, January 15. The ship Chrysolite, from Canterbury, anrved in port yesterday evening. She is one of Willis, Gann & Co.'s liners, aud iute*nded loading wool at Lyttelton ; but finding no opening, has come on —Ibid, 22nd, _ " The brig Louis and Miriam, Capt Vandervord, from Sydney, arrived in port on Saturday last, after a passage of 17 days. She brings a full cargo of general merchandise, and about 30 passengers, the greater portion of whom are Grermans, who, we understand, intend settling in the Rangitikei district. The vessel is consigned to Mr. E. Poarce.— lbid, 22nd.
