TARANAKI.

. The letter from the Government, in answer to the questions lately put to Mr Domett, has been received. The substance of what it says is this: — We cannot give you full and definite answers to your questions, as to do so might be highly prejudicial to the general good. As we .have already stated more than once, we will lose no practical opportunity of reinstating the settlement of Taranaki on a more secure and satisfactory basis than it has ever been in as yet. As one step towards this, we are going to bring into Taranaki 500 emigrants from Europe. Other means are also in contemplation, which it is not desirable further to particularise. As to the £200,000, we can only give you £25,000 of it at present, in addition to the £5,000 recently granted, for destruction of thistles. We are sorry, we cannot give a more satisfactory answer to the questions proposed." — Herald, Dec. 13tb. ■ ■ ' . H.MiS.S. Harrier, Commander Sullivan, arrived in the roadstead from Wellington this moining about 8 o'clock, bringing General Cameron, who landed immediately, under the customary salute of 15 guns, from Marslaud Hill. The General, we believe, will inspect the troops in garmon to-day at 4 p.m Ibid, 20th.
