The D irectory has been carefully re-wiitten, all the requisite alterations and additions have been made, and every effort used to ensure that this department of the work shall be as correct and complete as possible. It will thus prove of essential service both to the community, and to strangers visiting Wellington. The New Tariff, which ia published in full, will be found valuable as a reference to the British and Colonial Merchant. The Sailing Directions have been gathered from the most recent and authentic sources, and will, no doubt, be properly appreciated by masters of vessels and others. The Gardener's Calender has undergone a careful revision at the hands of Mr Robinson, and several important additions have been made to its previous details, which it is believed will mak« it in point of practical value equal to anything of a similar kind that has yet been published in the Colony. The Moon's Meridian passage ia given in astronomical time. This table is'used.in calculating the tides and its correctness may" be relied on. The Phases of the Moon have been reduced to Wellington civil time. The Statistics relative to Religion, Education, Population, {Land, Agriculture and Stock, have been compiled from the last Census returns, while the Imports and Exports, have been obtained from the Custom House The Publishers have to tender 'their grateful acknowledgments to those^entlemen, who have kindly lent their aid, in preparing the present edition of the Almanack. The painstaking labour and scientific acquirements, which Captain W. M. Smith R.A., has evinced in the preparation of the astronomical tables deserve high praise, while the professonal knowledge of Mr. Robinson, and others has rendered tho Gardeners Calendar much more perfect and complete than before. The Directory has been prepared by Mr. Edwards who has made every exertion to ensure its com pleteness and accuracy, and the general assistence he has afforded in other departments, has been of much value. Our sincere thanks are due to those..\vho have favoured us with advertisements, the large* cumber of which affords a satisfactory and cheering index, not only ofthecharactes and increasing prosperity of trade and commerce in Wellington, but also of th« public spirit of its inhabitants.
