HAWKE'S BAY.
We have the Hawke's Bay Herald to the 16tb. and the Times to the 18th instant, from which we make tbe following extracts. I * J*? W EATHEB,—Co P iouß and welcome showem fell during yesterday, filling the Napier waterbutts, and doing great servioe to the farmer's crops, and grass. Dissolution op the Council Consequent on the application of His Honor the Superintendent, a proclamation appeared in a reoent Gazette dia* solving the Provincial Counoil of Hawke's Bay. The new writs came down by the Queen, but no election notices, so far as we are aware, have yet been issued by the Returning Officer. New Magistrate.— By a Gazette published on the 6th inst., we observe that the name of Major « Whitmore has been added to the commission of the peace— preparatory, we suppose to his assuming the Civil Commissioner of this district. Native found Dead.— On Saturday last an old man named Ruka was found dead in his whare at Tamumuby another native named Tuknkai. The body bore some marks of violence, and it was suspected that the man had been murdered. An inqust upon the body was Subsequently held. whioh, in the absence of sufficient evidence, ni suited in an open verdiot. The affair, at first. ' oaused some excitement among the natives; iIW. Lancashire Relief Fund.— ln this provinoe subscriptions come in but slowly as yet, but this is owing in some measure to the want of a committee. * By way ot commencement, the sum of _IV2 lla was sent home by last mail.— lbid, Deserters cleverly Captured.— On Sunday last, during the stay of the Wonga Wonga afe Castle Point, Corporal Evans, who was one ofthe' fiassengers, went ashore for a short time to have* . ook at the place. He had not been many minutes oa ' terra firma when he discovered two deserters ftom the detachment of the 14th stationed at Napier. He forthwith took them into custody, and returned to the steamer with two extra passeneeiv > — Ibid. - ...»** Maobi Casb.— At the Resident Magistrate's' Court yesterday, the native accused of stealing % pair of trousers from the store of Mr Boddington of Clive, appeared in answer to the charge?
