To the Editor of the Wellington Independent. Sib,— ln your issue of the 9th in3tant, I notice that Capt Brodie has informed you, •« that he left Otago with the brig Remark, and that the Valiant had an interesting race with that vessel, arriving in this port four or five hours before her." Allow me to tell Capt Brodie I decidedly contradict it. When the Valiant left Otago, there was no appearance of the Remark sailing, and was not certain of starting on that day; and I should like also to know who was interested in the race as I am not and never heard about it. But as Captain I Brodie seems so interested in the sailing qualities ' of the Valiant, I beg to lay before him the following passages that ever the Valiant aud Remark have made together. First passage from here to Otago, Valiant left eight hours before the Remark, the latter vessel arriving at Otago three hours before her. The Valiant left again twentyfour hours before the Remark, the latter vessel arriving in Wellington thirty-siz hours before her ; and this passage up from Otago. the Valiant was hull down a-head when the Remark left, and next day she was just visible astern, and hove too ott the harbor, at 10 p.m, on Saturday evening, not deeming it prudent to come in, being heavy ■ thick squalls. J James Duncan, Master.
