ENGLISH INTELLIGENCE.
London, Sept. 26, 1862. The infant Prince the son of tke Crowu Princess of Prussia, was baptised ou the 13th September; his name is Albert Wilhelm Heinrieh Calvert. Extensire speculations have lately been effected in cotton, jute, hemp, and flax. In consequence of the . deficiency in the supply of cottop, a Dr. Harben has discovered a substitute for cotton, which is beings practically t ried — namely the marine plant Seostera Marina or common grass wrack. Mr. Laing has delivered long speeches at Manchester and Glasgow, condemning the pre sent system of the home Gorernraent of India. Public meetings have been held at Binning ham, Bristol, Southampton, Dublin, Newcastle and Glasgow, sympathising with Garibaldi, and to memorialise Government to use it influence to obtain the evacuation of Rome by French troops. A reign of terror still prevails in Tipperary. Great Orange demonstrations, attended, by 60,000 men, h&ve been held in Belfast. The grievance complained of was, that the law prohibiting party emblems has been carried into effect agai nst them and not against Roman Catholics. Riots and collisions between Orangemen and Catholics succeeded, lasting five days and nights. A thousand men were under arms. The military and constabulery were directed by a dozen magistrates. Only three persons were arrested. After the 23rd of September greater rigour was shown. Orangemen are warned against taking any part ill riots, by their secular metropolitan. The state of Ireland is every day becoming more alarming. Murders are committed in open daylight screened and abetted by the peasantry. The murderer Hayes is supposed to have escaped to America. The St. Leger Stakes was won by the Marquis, Buckstone second ; time 3 minutes 21 seconds. Doncaster Cup wou by Tim Whiffler, Buckstone second. Mr. Charles Dickens will not visit Australia. Mr. Spiers effected an engagement with Mr and Mrs. Charles Kean. Biovvnlow Hill Workhouse, and the church adjoining in Liverpool, has been dstroyed by fire ; twenty lives were lost. The Consul at Dardanelles, the agent for Lloyds, has absconded. He was concerned in extensive and complicated frauds. A fearful accident has occurred on the Midland Railway.
