AUCKLAND.

Yesterday evening the cutter Thames arrived from Coromandel. bringing with her two of the shareholders in Claim No. 16 Driving Creek No 6 Reef amalgamation. These gentlemen called upon us and requested us to state that they brought up 10 lbs 1 oz. of gold, procured by crushing a portion of the stone taken out of their leader. Tho claim is progressing well. A new leader, i hat promises to be equally remunerative as the old, has been struck.

Death of Mb. MaoCabe. — It is with very sincere regret we have to announce the decease of this gentleman, for a considerable period editor of the Southern Gross. Mr. VlacCabe, who has for several months past been in a very precarious condition, was a gentleman of varied attainments, and like most colonial literary men, his career was chequered one. His friends were many and attached, and he had the rare fortune of passing a political life without provoking any bitter personal animosities. His death, though ifc took no one by surpiise, was at the last sudden. He succumbed early on Sunday morning, although on the Saturday evening he considered himself to' be a good deal better. His remains were followed to their last resting place on Monday, by a numerous cortege of sorrowing friends. — Nero Zenlander, Oct. 21.

Melancholy an t d Fatal Accident. — .Ye regret that we havo to announce the fatal termination to the accident which befel lately Mr. Bruce, plasterer, of this city, who expired yesterday morning. A few days since he was employed in making repairs to the roof of a'house belonging to Mr. Newman, at Remuera — and for which purpose a scaffolding had been erected, and a ladder had. it appears, been used in its construction. The ladder, through which a piece of scantling supported one end of the platform, had been placed, was withdrawn during his absence, an \ without being aware of this, Mr. Bruce ascended the platform, which gave way. and lie fell heavily to the ground, a distance of sixteen feet. Mr. Bruce, was well known and generally respected in this community. — Ibid.
