The barque Harriet Arraitage arrived in this Harbour on .Wednesday afternoon, and per favor of Captain Holford, we have been supplied with a copy of the Sydney Mor-ning Herald of Sept, 13th, fromwhichwe make the following extracts. Friday, 7 p.m. The Telegraph was opened to-day, and has been in full work since 3 p.m. Good prospects have been obtained on the Wellington diggings, and the number of diggers is increasing. GOULBURN. Friday, 6 p.m. An attempt has been made to rob the mail from Lambing Flat to Cowra, by an armed bushranger. The driver whipped tbe horses, and escaped, though followed three miles. The bushranger snapped his revolver three times at tho mail driver. Tho murderers of Crotty, the Marengo mailman, are known to the police. They are two Frenchmen ; one is supposed to be en route to Sydney, by waj of JBurrangong It has been ascertained that the Lachlan escort robbers were all sons of settlers in the district. Two of them have "peached." _All will soon be in custody. BRISBANE. Friday, 5 p.m. The steamers Telegraph and Queensland arrived last night from the north. Gold digging is suspended (or the present, both at Calliope and Peak Downs. The reports from Mr. Manton's copper miue at the latter place are very favourable. A deputation has been sent up by Sydney capitalists to report on the mine. Heavy showers of raiu fell at Rockhampton on Saturday and Sunday last. MELBOURNE. Friday. 8 p.m, The Provident Institute was crowded with depositors to-day, The directors have called a meeting for Tuesday next, at which a balance sheet, and a statement of affairs, now in course of preparation, will be submitted. A meeting of the depositors is called for to-morrow, to take steps to protect their interests. Much distress is anticipated, above £150,000, the savings of the working'classes, being lost. There has been some small rush on the other banks of a similar character, but conducted with greater judgement. At the Supreme Court, in the matter of Bowie against Wilson, the costs taxed were altogether unfavourable to the latter. The Judges refused to interfere with the taxing master. At a meeting of the Council of the Victurian Rifle Association, held to-day, it was resolved to decline the proposal of the Adelaide Association, to shoot on their own ground. It is proposed that the match between the Victorian and New South Wales Volunteers take place on the 3rd November, at the Melbourne butts. The prize to be £100, £50 of which will be given to the winners, and £50 will be devoted to the purchase of a challenge shield. Ten rounds per man will be fired at each distauoe from 200 to 900 yards.

M-Lean was before the Police Court to-day, and committed for trial upon further charges of embezzlement.

There have been large sales of tea and tobacco at full rates.
