COMPENSATION TO TARANAKI.
We noticed on Saturday ibo resolution to which the House came un Friday night relative to this subject. Yesterday a resolution was carried, by which we may hope that the unfortunate settlers of Tstranaki will find from the sympathy of the Colony, that relief which hitherto the Imperial Government has failed to affoid as an act of justice. The resolution alluded to, remitted to a Select Committee the determination of ihe amount of losses sustained, and the consideration of the best mode of raising the amount, (about £200,000) to be chargeable, on the Colonial Revenue until the Imperil! Government can be induced to repay it. As soon as the Taranaki settlers receive their compensation, most of them will leave that Province ; so ihat in a few months we may anticipate that the Province, as a point of colonization will be bletted out ; that it will he a mere military post with a few camp followers ; that it will be a standing disgrace to those who
brought on the war, to the manner in which it was conducted, and the still more ignoble mnnuer in which it was brought to a conclusion,
