THE STATE OF TARANAKI.

Captain Atkinson, one of the members for Tarauaki, brought the present stite of that Province before the House last uight. He moved that a petition recently drawu up by that Province to His Excellency, praying to His Excellency, to graut full compensation for their pecuniary losses, lie referred to the Committee of Supply. Me detailed in a plain, straightforward mauner ; the heartrending position of the settlers th=re, frankly assured ihe House, that from what he had personally learut he was now satisfied that the Fox Ministry were fully bent on doing justice to Tarauaki at the earliest opportunity, although he had doubted it when His Excellency's speech was delivered ; and coincided in the view which had been expressed of the impolicy of dealing with Tarauaki iv any other way thau as a part of the Colony — that it could not be expected that a war over the whole Island should be precipitated by an attempt to restore that Province a shoit time earlier. Mr. Fitzgerald seconded the motion. Without entering into the question as to the legality of the claim on the colony, he contended that there was a claim iv

honor and without goiug into the question ppre r se, thought that tie reference of the subject to the Couamittee of Supply for its consideration, would simply be an act of justice.

A debate would have taken place thereon, but as the Standing Orders prevented the questiou being discussed the same evening, it was postponed until to-day.
