THE ENGLISH MAIL.

We think it most fortunate that the Wonga was not allowed to bring on the English Mail which had arrived at Duucdin some hours be fore she left. Mr. Ward will be better able to understand the reasonableness of tho complaints so constantly being made on this head. It was a constant occurrence while we received the mail via Nelson, aud this is not the first since it has come via Otago. The mail arrives from Mil.hourne at Otigo on its due date, just as a private steamer for Wellington is ready to start. The chartered steamer is not ready, and not liking to let it appear that she gets all the pay while another does the work, she detains the mail, and comes leisurely on thirty or fifty hours afterwards. The mail ought to have been given to tbe Wonga, and on arrival here a bonus should be her reward. We trust that in future arrangements, something of this kind will be held out as an inducement to private steamers, when the contract steamers are not ready to bring on the mails. It takes almost as long sometimes to bring the mail here from Otago or Nelson as it does from Melbourne to Otago. The preesut ii a case in point. The mail arrived at Otago on Thursday, but did not reach here until Tuesday morning; while the Wong aarrived in port on Sunday afternoon. We again say we trust the system of giving a bonus for expediting the delivery of the mud will form a feature iv ibe next atiangement.
