WANGANUI.

Waitara. — The natives who came from tbe South as a deputation from the Otaki meeting to the Ngatiruanui about opening the road between this and Taranaki have now all returned, without having effected their object. Those of them who went to Waitara report that the kiug flag is hoisted there. They were obliged to pay a toll of 30s. to the Taranaki for permission to pass through their lauds, although themselves King natives. — Wanganui Chronicle.

Race Meeting, — A Public Meeting was recently held in the Rutlaud Hotel, when the Eace days, were fixed for the 6th. and 7th. November, ensiling, and the followiug gentlemen selected as Stewarts. Viz Dr. Gibson John Cameron, Etq., Marangai, Capt. Clarke, 57tb , Regt., E. Lewis, Esq., and Major Cooper. Dugald Cameron Esq., of Turakina, was unanimously, chosen as clerk to the Course, and Mr. Henry Stokes has agreed to officiate as Secretaiy and Treasurer.

Death from Drinking. — On Thursday evening a discharged Soldier was found dead in Wicksteed Place. A Coroner's inquest was held on the body, and the jury returned the following verdict; " Died from congestion of the brain produced by continuous drinking". Iv the course of the investigation one of the witnesses a bar keeper in a hotel, stated in reply, to questionslrom the Coroner that the deceased was not drunk, neither was he sober, and on being asked. '• When he considered a man wns drunk" replied shen he can't stand " such then is a Barman's Philosophy of drunkeness.
