HAWKE'S BAY.

Accident.— On Wednesday evening a young cow, one of a mob of cattle that were being shipped on board the Victoria by Mr. Harding, broke away from the others at the Spit, and ran up the Sbakespeare-road towards the town pur* sued by Mr. Harding and bis sen. The furious animal turned in to Coote-road, and there knocked down Mr. Crossley, breaking his collar bone and otherise injuring- him severely. It then took to the islaud on the right, and Mr. Hardicg, thinkingit would remain there, returned. It appears, however, that the brute proseeded at a furious pace and rushed down Brewster -street into Shakespeare-road. Just opposite Mr. Doberty's place it ran at Mr. Hill the saddler, and knocked him down — without, however, inflicting serious injury. Fortunately the animal itself fell and was instantly secured by the byestanders. Jt was then taken to Mr. Danrers' yard and, next day, was sold to Mr. Boss— not, we hope, with the intention of letting it run at large, otherwise we may have to record some more serious casualty.

The Native Land Pobchase Ordinance.— We learn that ibe Commissioner of Crown Lands has received peremptory instruction from bis officcial superior to take proceeding under tbis Ordinance against Mr. Colenso, for alleged illegal occupation of Native land at Waitangi; and that such proceedings will be immediately insituted. The motive of selecting this gentleman from amongst a host of occupants of native land is alleged to be that the natives, upon the occasion of Mr. Ward's visit to the province, demanded bis ejection ; but il tts a strange coincidence that a tresspasser (if trespasser he be) of may years standing— he, be it remembered, being' a member of the General Assembly, and counted as one of the opposition should be brought up just before ihe sitting of that body. [We have since learned that the hearing of this case is fixed for Monday next.
