JAVA.
(From the Singapore Free Press, January 2'd.) By tbe Dutch mail steamer we have Java papers to the 14th current. Very stormy weather had prevailed all over Java, and much rain had fallen. The papers are filled with accounts ofin ; undations, the destruction of roads and bridges and the bursting of dams. The crops of paddy, iudigo, and other produce, in many places, have been much injured. At Batavia-and Samarang, communication with the shipping was nearly suspended on account of the heavy weather. A young officer of Government, Mr. Jeekel, newly appointed secretary to tie Residency of Suraya, lost his life at Samarang in attempting to laud there. The intelligence from Banjermassing is of a varied nature — success and disasters. On the 15th December three columns of about 70 men each, under Major de Veer de Bennekom and Captains Van Langen and Van Rochemont attacked a hostile position at Benua La was, in the Amonthay district. The attack was made simultaneously in fiont and rear and at the side. Two bentings were carried in about an hour, the enemy offering a most determined opposition. Many of the rebels were killed, including one of the leaders, and a large quantity of weapons and two flags fell into the hands of the assailants. The position of the enemy was very strong, and in order to attack the second benting it was necessary to cross a river, which was done by soma of the officers and men swimming, while others made use of a rude bridge composed of a single bamboo. Five chiefs from t : ie Kahayan, with sixty-six followers, had come in and made sub mission. On the 14lh December the control" ler, Suyk, with an escort of five soldiers, set out from Mungu Tuayu for the purpose of making an inspection in the Margasari district. On the night of the 16th he was treacherously attacked aud put to death, with three of his escort. The remaining two soldiers succeded in escapiug. Tbe collector of customs at the same place also succeeded in hiding himself in the jungle, and afterwards got on board the tug Van Os, which brought him to Beeju mussing. The customhouse was plundered and burnt down. Informa tion having been received that the murderers of the controller were to be found at a place about three-quarter of an hour's distmce from Margasari, the second lieutenant, Crocs, with a detachment of twenty bayonets, proceeded iv that direction to reconnoitre. He was suddenly at tacked, and, with fourteen of his meu, killed,, while other four were wounded. A search was afterwards made for the murderers, but they were not to be found.
