Renner, sailed from Wellington at 9-30 a.m. on the 13th for Picton where she arrived at 6 p.m. the same day, having experienced a strong north-west gale in crossing the straits. Remained at Picton until 9 p.m. when she took her departure for Wellington, and arrived here at 4 a.m., to-day ; having been absent from port only 19 hours. She brings no news. H.M.S.S. Orpheus, 21 guns, Commodore Burnett, wa9 expected to leave England for the Australian Station by the end of November. A friend, on whose judgment we rely, says: — Orpheus is an improved Pelorus, but, unfortunately, like her, without a main deck. Mr. Amphlett (late of the Niger) is her Paymaster. I hope you will find the new Commodore all that, you could wish ; he is the antipodes of Seymour. America promises still to get us into difficulties, but we have a good force afloat, and otherwise well prepared for eventualities. T have been on board the Warrior, and 1 cannot say 1 approve of her. She is too unwieldly. Two "W aniors, each 1000 tons, would have been better. I object to all the eggs being in one basket. The Black Prince, also a similar vessel, is at Portsmouth preparing for sea. These, with the Defence and Resistance, nearly ready for commission, represent the total of our plated ships at present off the stocks. — New Zeolander.
