I. C. R. M. COMPANY. 'pHE "LORD WORSLEY," for Canterbury, I Wellington, Nelson, and Sydney, on Monday, the 4th November. Steerage Passage to Canterbury ..£2OO Do. do. to Wellington.. 5 5 0 Do. do. to Nelson 5 6 0 Do. do. to Sydney .... 5 5 0 YOUNG & M'GLASHAN, Agents. Why should the steerage fare to Wol-, lington be £5 ss, while it is only £2 to I Canterbury ? Why shouid it be as much to Wellington as it is to Nelson? For what unaccountable reason should the same rate be charged to Wellington aud Nelson as to Sydney ? Oa what priociple does the the Inter colonial profess to charge ? If £2 be a remunerative price from Otago to Canterbury — a distance of 150 miles, is not £5 ss. from Otago to Wellington, only twice that distauce, a most extortionate one ? If the iuter-colonial can afford to couvey passengers to Nelson — a stage further than Wellington — for £5 ss. is it uot uni just to charge us the same rate P If £o ds pays for a 1500 mile trip to Sydney, why should passengers to Wellington — only a fifth of the distance — be made to pay an equal amount ? For a heavily subsidised Company like the luter-colonial to charge in this fashion is beyond endurance, and we sincerely trust the General Government will uot allow such a wrong as this is to be inflicted without remonstrance. The Inter-colonial, while it remains a subsidized company, has no right to act thus partially, thus detrimentally to the interests of any one portion of New Zealand. It is much to be regretted that there is no competition further than Canterbury, for we suppose it was only because another steamer was running to Canterbury the same day, that (ares were reduced to that province. We last week alluded to the necessity for opening a steam communicaiion of our own between Wellington and Otago, two or three times a mouth: then we looked at it merely as a questionof markets ; to-day we have shown it to be equally desirable as a question of passenger traffic.
