THE SEARCH FOR. GOLD.
Our readers must have noticed with much satisfaction the account of the arrangement, given in our last, as having been made by ihe Chamber of Commerce with Mr. Williams of the Hutt, for the formation of a gold exploring party. Mr Williams is a man of considerable practical expeiience, and headed a working party at Torawiti for several weeks with some success. The spot selected- by him for his first experiments is, as previously stated, on the Eustern side of the Wairarapa, whither he has lately proceeded.
There will be found in our to-day's columns au advertisement by the Superintendent, offering a reward of One Thousand Pounds for the discovery of an available gold field ; in addition to which we believe His Honor has consented to make a grant in aid of the expenses of the gold seeking party, equal to the amount subscribed by the public. Now that we see a prospect of securing a first class geologist from England, are in possession of the temporary services of the Hon. Mr. Crawford, have offered a handsome reward, and set a practical party to work exploring; we think all reasonable means have been taken to discover the whereabouts of the gold we all more or less believe to be playing at hide-and-seßk in this province. Those who say our Government is very inert, will have difficulty in finding any other in New Zealand more alive to the interests of its province in this respect, than ours has shown itsttlf to be.
