TARANAKI.
By the Wonga Wonga, we have received a Taranaki Herald of the 11th inst.
A letter had been received by Major Herbert from the Under Secretary Mr. Gisborne, intimating the probability " of an entire organic change in the establishment of the present Taranaki Militia, and a great reduction in its expense."
vVe extract the following from the Herald of the I lth inst. — The Wonga Wonga, from Wanganui, wilh a detachment of the 65th Regiment, under Lieut. Muttit, arrived on Tuesday morning. Owing to strong head winds, she has had a protracted passage of seven days, and was oompelled to run into Kapiti and Nelson. Our files from Nelson are to the 4th instant, and from Wf.nganui to the 26th ult. The Wonga Y\ onga returned to Wangawui on Monday evening with a detaohment of the 57th Regiment, under Major Hassard, and is expected back to-day with the rest of the 65th detachment, which has been for so many years stationed at Wanganui.
We extract the following from the Taranaki Herald of the 4th instant : —
We regret to announce Mr. T. King's resignation of the office of Provincial Treasurer, in consequence ot a resolution of the Provincial Council to the effect that that office was incompatible with his situation in the New Zealand bauk. The objection appears to us to have been in the present case purely fanciful. A man of honorable principles would be absolutely restrained by the fact of holdiug both officers from taking any advantage of speoial information he might possess as Treasurer for the benefit of the Bank, and to the detriment of the Government, or of private individuals The manager of the bank will find little difficulty in obtaining all the information
he requires, and it will now be his duty to make the best he can of it for the benefit of the bank alone, which will thus probably be a gainer by the change. The province has lost a reliable and efficient public servaut, and we hope the Superintendent may succeed in finding as able a man to repines him.
