DEATH BY DROWNING AT THE UPPER TAIERI.

Intelligence was received in town on New Year's Day, of the death of a man ] named John Moore, who was unfortunately drowned while bathing near the West Taieri Ferry. It appears that the; man's four mates— Alex." Wilson, James Devereux, William Watson, and James Nesbit — were all present at the time, as was also David Buchanan, who was in charge of the ferry boat / and they all concur in representing his death to have been purely . accidental. He sank suddenly, and never appeared again, but whether taken with cramp, or from what other cause, it is impossible to determine, as the body had not been recovered when tbe messenger' left for Dunedin with the melanoholy news. From information supplied by the mates of tbe deoeased, and from documents found among his clothes, it seems that he oame from Naas, or the neighbourhood, County Kildare, Ireland, and tbat his falber and mother are both supposed to be still alive. The - deceased had a considerable sum in his possession, in money and securities, as will be seen by the following list of property : — Twenty-one (21) sovereigns Two (2) half-sovereigns One ifil-note (U.8.A.), No. 6487 Two (2) shillings One gold receipt for 32f oz. " " 18 oz. 10 dwt. " " 36 oz. 10 dwt. " 10 oz. In a purse was found an old letter. He ' had also with him two blankets, a counterpane, three books, and some old clothes, The valuables were taken charge of by Mr. James Fulton, the magistrate for the distriot, and by him" forwarded to the Commissioner of Police in Dunedin. — Otago Colonist, Jan, 3.
