By the Fawn, we have received our usual files of Auckland papers up to the 17th inst.
His Excellency had been received with the greatest ■ enthusiasm -by the Lower Waikutos, and the " Register" of the 16th inst. suya it was rumoured — " That the Upper Waikitos hadnronouueed favorably in respect of Sir George Grey's proposed system of Native Government, and ha:l not only sent au urgent invitation to his Excellency to visit them, but that a large war canoe, manned by 60 picked warriors, was to be despatched tor his conveyance to Ngaruawhia. William Thompson was reported to be most favorably disposed towards the Governor's plans, and the prospects of. a happy settlement of past difficulties wore a most hopeful aspect." vl'lio Mermaid, from London sth Sap-; tember, arrived at Auckland ou the 16th Deoembor. - . . .
