Estimates of Revenue andExpendi* tube. — We select from the Estimates for the coming half-year, the following items. The total revenue is estimated ai £151,100. To make up this amount the ohief items are customs £15,000; gold export d uty, £15,000 ; gold-field licenses £1,000; repayment ol immigration loans £7,000 ; and sale debentures, £50,000. The expenditure is estimated at 160,198 14s 7d. Amongst other items the Superintendent's department is to absorb, £725, the Provincial Council's, 2621 ; Land department, 862/ ; Surveys £5,645 J Police, £10,388; Miscellaneous, 1,700/; Roads and bridges, 1,390/. The late Sticking-up. The police have been unceasing in their searoh after the perpetrators of the late sticking-up at the West Taieri. Mr. Inspector Cadell, has been scouring the country in the neighbourhood of where the outrage was committed. The horse taken from Mr. Miller has been found. Several men have been arrested on suspicion at Waitahuua. Inland Navigation. — A very important trip was lately made by the Rainbow steamer, up the Taieri River, towards Lake Waipora. After passing the Taieri Ferry the right branch of the river bends to the Waipora Lake, at the extreme end of which Stores have been opened. From this spot to Tuapeka is a distanoe of only sixteen miles, but the road is very rough. The "Rainbow" passed about four miles above the Ferry, and from thence the goods were taken to Lake Waipora by lighters. After leaving the Ferry, the left branoh of the river leads into Lake Waihola. The main road to the digging takes an immense cirouit round this Lake. If a road could be found from the further side of the Lake to the diggings, the distance would be muoh reduoed ; and as the entranoe to the Lake is better than that to Lake Waipora, probably the Waihola would be the best route. A sum of £12,000 was voted by the Council some time baok towards olearing the bar and improving the navigation of the Taieri River and Waihola; Lake. : The money has not yet been expended, and a petition is now before the Counoil praying that steps be taken for immediately applying it to the purposes contemplated.— Ibid.
