AS it is proposed to publish, early uext year, a STUD BOOK for New Zealand, persons possessed of thoroughbred horses, who wish to have their stock recorded in the pages, of the work in question, are requested to furnish the undersigned, as soon as possible, with the fullest particulars they possess of the breeding of their hoises. The great and increasing interest shown in all the" provinces in the breeding of thorough-bred horse stock, renders a work of the above character highly desirable, as, without it, in a few years the pedigrees of many valuable animals will be altogether lost, so that it will be impossible at any future time to certify to the blood of their descendants. From the circumstance that, until quite recently, no Stud Book was ever published in New South Wales, to which colony New Zealand is so largely indebted for its korse'stock, it has already become difficult to (trace the pedigrees of many of our supposed thorough-bred horses to the English Stud Book, the only recognised authority of a horse's purity of breed. Much, however, maybe done by research and inquiry to clear up doubtful pedigrees if the task is at once undertaken, but the longer the work is deferred the greater will be the difficulty of ultimate -success. . ' The following is given as specimens of the form in which the Editor of the work wishes information to be furnished him, or as nearly so as circumstances will permit :— (1). The intials, E.T.8., signify English thorough- 1 bred, and, where used, show that the horse to which they apply was bred in England, and may be found J in the English Stud Book. ' | As a New Zealand Stud Book will be ft work of great value to all breeders of thoroughbred horses in Tne-eoloflyi -ana^wilrr-bereanefrt)* "«^tsndard book of reference, it is hoped that persons having 1 thoroughbred stock, or what are supposed to be so, will lose no time iv furnishing the Editor with the fullest information they possess respecting thera. Where pedigrees, of colonial-bred horses are defective, the Editor will endeavour, when practicable, to render them perfect. "" The New Zealand Stud Book will be uniform in size and style with the English Stud Book, and contain in addition to those of our own colonial horses, the pedigrees, as far as they can be procured, of all thoroughbred stallions and mares imported into Australia, from which so lare a portion of our own stoclf are descended ; and to render reference to the English Stud Book, which is not always at hand, as little necessary as possible, pedigrees will be carried back to well-known sires and dams of English horses, so as to show the particular strains of blood our horses possess.
