LATER FROM OTAGO.

By the kotch Petrel, which arrived in port this morning, wo have received papers from O'.ago up to the 26th iust., courteously supplied by Captain Scott. The intelligence is of a similar character to that which has come to hand these two or three last mails. Numbers of people wore still arriving, and a great many were leaving; but the balauce was in favor of those who remain. Mr. Gabriel iteed was out prospecting, and it was reported that he had discovered a new field; but as no official account of the fact had been received, and as that gentleman would certainly have reported immediately to the Government had he made any important discoveries, it may be assumed that the reports of his success are without foundation. The Witness of the 26th Oot, says that " a remarkably fine specimen of gold in quartz has been brought to town. It ia a cube, measuring about 7 inches on each side. One side is covered with gold, whioh is also in crevices half an inch deep. The quantity of gold it is estimated to contain is above a pound weight. The locality in which this fine specimen was found ia a secret. It is satisfactory to find that our gold mining is likely to take the form of quart* crushing, aud we may now feel more assured of the permanence of the yield of gold tban we have hitherto done." Tho Lord Worsley was entering the Otago Heads on Wednesday afternoon last, as the Petrel was leaving. The brig Funny A. Garriqucs, hence, arrived at Otago ou Sunday, the 27th October, All her stock reached there in capital oondition, having lost none on the passage. The brigantine Mary Thomson was off the Otago Heads on Wednesday afternoon last. The Witness reports six vessels as having arrived from Melbourne and Sydney, from the 18th to the 23rd October, with 540 passengers ; and 17 vessels had sailed for the Australian Colonies with 453 passengers.
