We. are informed by passengers on board the Airedale, that two severe shocks of earthquake had been felt at Auckland, but that very little damage had been done.
The good folks of Auckland had been keeping holiday for a whole fortnight. With regard to the new Regime, little was known. The Register of the 7th iust, says : —
•' Colonel Browne has left us and Sir George Grey has been induoted to his vacated ohair. All happiness to him that has gone ; and all honor to bim tbat has oome. We must abide with patience, as we do with confidence, the indication of his policy. That policy, we are persuaded, will prove to be as beneficial to the European as it will be merciful, yet firm and uncompromising, towards the Native raoe. His Excellency has a high prestige to sustain, and a still higher prestige to acquire. We venture to predict that whilst he will never tarnish the one, he will not fail to achieve the other.
During the past fortnight, Auckland may be said fo have been keeping holiday.' No sooner was the landinggof one Governor duly celebrated, than the departure of another had to be gracefully demonstrated. Then followed the installation of our present Chief. All these are great historical events. Last week, we chronicled tbe first; this week we record the two Jast.
The Auckland Branch of the. Bank of New Zealand was announced to be opened on the 16th inst., (to-morrow).
