SYDNEY MARKETS .

(From the S. M. Herald, September 2 1st,) Since the departure of the Benares with the August mail business generally ha 9 been very slack) and the fluctuations in our markets have been i'ew. There is apparently but little desire to ezzter into speculative transactions and buyers ap pear only to operate to meet present requirements. The principle feature of tho month is the excitement caused by tho discovery of large gold-fields in New Zealand. Up to the present time the quantity of gold brought in by the escorts during the month was 15,635 ounces, and of this quantity 7876 ounces have already been forwarded to Melbourne and Sydney, and the remainder is to be forwarded to Melbourne by the Oscar. In Melbourne the desire to visit the new gold-fields is very greafc, and thousands have ulready left; but here the people are more cautious and are waiting for further news. T.ie effect of this discovery oi gold in New Zealand will, no doubt, cause a great

demand for goods to merit the rdqukbtnent^ otthe people who are swarming there, and this for the tim 6 bding will induce a brisk trade.
