LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

Alma Temperance Soctety.-~A meeting of the above Society was held on Friday evening last, at the Mechanic's Institute, and considering the inclemency of the weather, there was a very good attendance. The meeting was addressed by Messis. Trueman, Laurence, and Read, who dwelt very forcibly upon the evils aiising from intemperance. At the close of the meeting the Chairman announced that upwards of seventy members had joined in a very short period. We wish the Society every success. The Chatham Islands. — Mr. Seed of the Custom's Depaitment Ifere, has been directed to investigate the slate ofthe Custom's Department at the Chatham Islands, under the SubCollectoiahip of Mr. Sband. Mr. Seed pioceeded to the Islands yesterday in the Esther.

' Steamee Hace. — We have been usked hy several to call attention to the race Between the steamers Slorm Bird and Wonga, on Friday evening last. The Wonga wailed for the Storm Bird, and until round the point they raced at their utmost speed; the funnel of one of them emitting constant flame. There can be no justification for' such racing. If the boats belonged to rival companies, the practice might be occasionally passed over without notice; hut without the slightest object to be gained, it must be condemned as incurring a useless risk, eveu if taking place without passengers on beard.

Woodford St. Hill of Napier was to have preached at St. Paul's on Sunday week and at St. Peter's on Sunday list, but not being able to arrive in time for tlie first and being obliged to leave before the second, the Bishop snpplied his place. The' total amount which the collections after these sermons will place to the building fund is about £16.
