Wonga Wonga, Captain Renner, from Nelson and Picton, arrived in this harbour on Wednesday last, at 8 p.m. She left Nelson on Tuesday evening at a quarter past seven o'clock, arrived at Picton the following morning at halfpast six ; having passed the Tasmanian Maid on the passage, and beating her by one hour and threequarters. The Wonga Wonga discharged 24 tons of cargo at Picton, embarked 24 passengers, and. sailed again at half-past twelve p.m. of the 25th, arriving here as above. After leaving the Sound she experienced a head wind and sea. , . The schooner Tyne arrived in this harbour this morning, from Otago. She sailed from Dunedin on the ISth instant, and lay for three days at the Otago Heads, in 'consequence of strong adverse winds. From thence, experienced light) variable winds, She brings no later news. J
The Fanny A. Garriques entered outwards at Otago on the 17th instant, for Wellington. The Freehridge, from Melbourne, arrived at Nelson on Saturday last. The New Zealand Goto Fields.— The startling intelligence that six thousand ounces of gold had just been Received at Melbourne, by the Oscar, gives fair promise of proving tho auriferous character ol" the Otago gold diggings, and also of i giving an impetus to the passenger traffic. We perceive that another vessel, the brig Plighlan< { Lassie, has heen laid on hy Mr. J. Menssies oi Newcastle, for the conveyance of passengers to Otago, and that, should inducement offer, she will be despatched at once. The fine clipper ship Lady Young, is also announced for the above destination on the 25th instant. Messrs. Gr. R. Dibbs [ and Co. aro the agents of thia vessel, which holds out the additional inducement of a limited number of reserved berths for the accommodation of passengers for the northern ports. A third vessel, the clipper brig Yarrow, is also announced for Otago. She will he despatched ,by Messrs, Binglo and Co., on or about the 25th instant. Those intending to proceed to New Zealand have un • doubtedly, a goodly choice of conveyance thither. — Newcastle Chronicle. The Otago Go_d-Fie_ds.— The rush to this gold-fields is still very great at Melbourne. The Age of the llth instant says that the total number of persons who took their departure for the. New Zealand gold-fields from the 20th ultimo to date, was 3060. On the llth instant, the following vessels left ; — Giant's Causeway, with 120 ; Aldinga, steamer, with 167 ; and the City of Hobart, steamer, with 1 92 passengers. Loss of the British Babque Norna.-— By the last mail from Manila, per H.C.M.S. Don Antonio Escano, we find that intelligence had been received touching the loss of the ahove vessel. She had left Newcastle (N.S.VV.) bound to Hongkong, with a cargo of coals, and struck, so we hear, somewhere near Drummond's Island. If the locality is correct, we are at a loss to understand what the vessel was doing so far out of the usual course adopted hy vessels coming from the Australian colonies to China. The captain and a part of his crew managed to get to Guam in one or more of the boats, leaving a portion of the crew at the wreck. H.M.S. Pioneer, hourly expected from the North will, we are led to believe, be despatched immediately after her arrival here in search of the missing members of this unfortunate vessel's crew. This is the barque Noma, the captain and second mate of which, were a short time back arraigned before the Court in Sydney, for the murder and ill-treatment of one of the crew on her passage from Foochou to Sydney. We do not hear of any lives having been as yet sacrificed. — China Overland Trade Report, June 11. .*.
