. The. Lord Ashley, with the English mail, arrived on Monday, at 4 p m., after a some what lengthly passage from Wellington of twenty *four hours. . She was off .this port at 8 a.m. ; but a dense mist with rain and a hard north-easterly gale compelled her to heave-to till 3 p.m , when the fog clearing off a little the land was -sighted, and she bore up for this port. During the whole of tho time that she was hove-to, she was under lull steam, and every effort was made to wttrk her clear away from the land ; but notwithstanding the most strenuous exertions, the lead-line, which was kept constantly going, continued to mark fourteen fathoms. Her fan being continually lifted out of the water by .the mountainous sea that was running, tho veasel could just hold her own, and no more. It began to be feared that night would come on her while in this critical Position ; but as abovo reported, the land was descried on tho starboard head at 3 p.m. much to the oy of all on board, and she came to an anchor. — Lytieltoii Times, July' 31.
