ENGLISH EXTRACTS.

The Henry Fertile. '.'hired- sailing transport, preparing to' reoeive troops for' Auckland, New^Zealand, Port~9mputs!, was yesterday officially ipsjpected fry the Goverument authorities, and . was so highly commended by them that she deserves some speoial mention. The ship is the property of Messrs. Fernie Brothers, of Liverpool; St. John's built, of 1549 55-100 tons register, and, if we except her short run home to Liverpool from St. John's, is now about to commence her first voyage. She is fitted aloft with double topsail-yards and with wire-standing rigging ou deck. She is fitted " Boston fashion," her aft-deok house, in which is sleeping accommodation for 21 officers (military), with main saloon," &c, are all fitted with every eon«f venience and even luxury that can be expected on board ship. Before tbe mainmast are the ship's officers' cabins, cook houses, &c, and Dr. Normandy's patent distilling apparatus, by which every 20 hours 800 gallons of the sea-water tho ship floats in is "transformed into a purer and more pleasant drinking water than can be, in most instances, obtained on shore. She carries seven boats, four of ,which are fitted with Kynaston's patent disengaging hooks. In addition to the commonly fitted ships' pumps, she is also fitted with Winstanley and Kellypatent syphon pumps, which, by the aid of 10 men, easily discharge 12,000 gallons of water in an hour. Tbey can also be converted either into a fire- engine; or instead of throwing water put of the ship, can throw it in with equal rapidity. The main troop deck is 170 feet long from the forecastle partition to its after part; 36 ft. in width, and 7 ft. in height from the deck to the under part of the upper deck beams. The woman's quarters at the after-part of this deck oontain sleeping accommodation for 41, and their admirable ventilation was warml) commended by tbe inspecting officers. Indeed, perhaps no ship ever presented a better specimen pf a model troop, deck than does the main deck of the Henry \ Fernie. The ventilation is admirable throughout. Admiralty pattern windsails* throw au immense volume of air down the hatchways, while . air shafts and patent ventilators of all kinds keep her decks swept by a constant ourrent of fresh air, and to assist even this amount of ventilation when necessary patent ventilating maohines for extracting the foul air from between decks, and pump» ing down, a supply of fresh, are stationed .down below. On the main deck there are 44 messes, with births for swinging the hammocks of 437 men. The loveer deck has a less portion devoted to the use of the troops, owing to the number she takes out being less than she oould accommodate. It is partitioned off at 90 feet length, has 32 mess tables,— 3o for men of 10 eaob, and two for women of ten eaoh, and has the neoessary hammo ok accommodation for tbe men. This, like the main deck, is well-lighted, as well ventilated, and of equal height from , '.deck to beam. At the olose of the inspection of the fittings of the ship, the offices, medical and naval, who officially „ surveyed her deolared. that, in their dpi- * mon, she was the most perfeot troopship that had, within their knowledge, ever .beep surveyed at Portsmouth. The ship was fitted out at Liverpool, under the superintendence of Commander Leveester, R.N., Admiralty Agent, at that port. ,' The ship : will' embark her, troops thia morning, and will then proceed to Queenstown, where she will take in- the remainder before finally sailing for New Zealand, A powerful steanHug.which towed the ship to Portsmouth from Liverpool/ ig detained by Mr. Fernie at the former port, and will tow the ship to Queenstown should the winds prove at all adverse. The following are the prinoipal dimensions of this fine vessel : — Length between perpendiculars, 200 ft. ; breadth to outside plank, 39 feet 1 in. ; depth from tonnage deck to ceiling at midships, 20 ft. 5 in.y depth from upper deck to ceiling at midships, 27 feet 9 inohe.s, The Henry Fernie, like most merchant clipper vessels, has not an ounoe 'of superfluous: weight outside her stem, a_4 this with, the bold spring of her decks forward" must retider, her a very easy shjp in a s eawayVV ' ,"" « Lord Johu Russell has officially notified to Sardinia that the Queen of England will receive; the Marquis Ad'zeglio as Minister of the King of Italy*,. The-Ee- ; dral Counoil of Switzerland has likewise - notified its readiues to reoeive the Minister of the King of Italy. ; ; "';"■'' ■* y

Wo understand, however, that it was intended to have sent about as many more— but a number of them jumped out ofthe punt in which they were being conveyed to the . vessel, and swam ashore ; and they could, not be got together in time to be shipped by this opportunity. A good s tockyard at _£ai • Warra- Would afford • increased facilities to, shippers of stock; and if a substantial wharf was^ruh opt 50 or CO feet further than the present one^ there would be sufficient depth? of water for vessels of any cjass to lay/ alongside, and then tfte;re would be ho necessity for using. {mnts at alj. , We, trust that, our enterprising fel- . ow citizeps .". may be successful in their praise-; ; worthy endeavours to establish a trade between Wellington and Auckland.
