Storm Bird, Captain Malcolm, from Otago, arrived in this harboui on Fiiday night, after a quick passage of 50 hours from heads to heads. She left Dunedin on Wednesday last, and experienced light head winds the whole way. The Storm Bird is a sister vessel to tha Wonga Wonga, having been built by the same owners and

from the same lines. Her length from stem to stern is 106 feet; breadth of beam 19 feet: and depth of hold 7 feet lOJ inches ; she has two engines of 15 nominal horse power each ; her average rate of speed under steam, is 8 miles an hour ; and sailing aud steaming she has gone 12 miles an hour. Her cabin accommodation is superior tp the Wohga's. The main cabin is larger, in consequence of the companion ladder being further aft, but the.ladies' cabins are smaller, and instead of being aft are at either side of the vessel. There are two ladies' cabins, containing 8 berths ; and there is sleeping accommodation in the main cabin for 10 passengers. Her fore-cabin accommodation is also very good; thero are beiths'for 22 passengers. There' is a deck-house abaft tho fore-inadt, with accommodation for the captain, mate, chief engineer and two firemen. The Storm ford is a smart looking vessel, a fit companion for our own little favourite Wonga, and as we understand she is for sale, we trust she may be purchased by our mercantile community, so as to enable them to extend and consolidate the commercial interests of Wellington.

The Storm Bird. — Yesterday afternoon, a party of gentlemen took an excursion round, the harbour and out to the Heads, for the purpose of testing the qualities of this fine little vessel. She started from Swinbourne's wharf at 3-25 p.m., taking the sweep of the harbour, round Some's Island, and out to the light-house and back, ¥ and returned to tho wharf at 6*30 p.m Tho.ie was a short detention after starting, and the vessel was well in off Point* Jerningham when her course was altered and she proceeded towards the Light House.' After proceeding outside the Heads, her head was turned to port. At 5*28 a.m., the lighthouse bore east, and she made the run home in 51 minute's, the tide being in her favor. Sho ran from a cross bearing (tho pilot's house on with tlie outer rock of Barrett's Reef) until the engines were slowed, in 46 minutes, being at the rate of eight and a half miles per hour. The engines worked very smoothly, and the vibration was comparatively slight- The engines with 91b of steam, and 20 vacuum made 102 revolutions, and with I lib of steam 107 revolutions ; the highest rate of speed being a little above eight and a half miles, and the average about eight miles an hour. The Company appeared to enjoy themselves amazingly, and expressed themselves as being well pleased with tlie courtesy and attention, shown them by Captain Malcolm and all on board.

BiRTn. — At "Wellington 3rd April, the wife of Mr. John Astill of a Son. , ,
