O7HEREAS Arthur Guyon Purchas * * of Onelmnga, in the Province of Auckland, Clerk, and James Ninnis of the same place, Mining Engineer, have in the manner provided by the Purchas and Ninnis Flax Patent Act, 1860, deposited in the Office of the 1 Colonial Secretary a specification of a certain invention claimed to have been discovered by them for the preparation of the fibre Phormium Tcnax, and other plants for manufacturing purposes, and a statement of the principles of such invention and drawings thereof with references thereto, and specimens of the manufactured article resulting from such invention, and also a declaration made by them that they are as they believe the first, and true inventors of the said invention, and whereas they have made application for the issue to them of Letters Patent for the protection of the said invention for the term of 14 years. Now therefore, I, Edward William Stafford, the Colonial Secretary of New Zealand, do hereby in pursuance of the said Act require any person who nlay conceive that he would be prejudiced by the granting of Letters Patent for the said invention to send to the Colonial Secretary at this Office within fftur months from the date of this Gazette (6th December, 1860), a statement in writing setting forth the grounds of such objection, subscribed with his proper name and address. Colonial Secretary's Office, Auckland, 11th December, 1860. npHE Government of New Zealand is ■**- prepared, subject to the undermentioned conditions, to give rewards to the amount of £4,000, for the discovery of efficient means for rendering the Fax and other fibrous plants of New Zealand, available as articles of export, viz : — £2,000. To the person who shall, by some process of his own invention, first produce from the Phormium Tenax, or other fibrous plant indigenous to New Zealand, fifty tons of merchandise. £1,000. To any person, other than the person entitled to the first reward, who shall, by some process of his own invention, next produce from the Phormium Tcnax, or other fibrous plant indigenous to New Zealand, fifty tons of merchandise. £1,000.. Viz. : — £200 to each of the first five persons, other than those entitled to the first and second rewards, who shall by any process, whether of his own invention or not, produce from the Phormium Tenax, or other fibrous plant indigenous to New Zealand, twenty tons of merchandise. The merchandise must be saleable as an article of Export from the Colony of New Zealand, and have been produced at a cost not exceeding 75 per cent, oi its value at the Port of Entry from which it is exported: and the process used must be fully made known, with a view to the discovery being at once made available to the public. His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand will from time to time appoinl Commissions, to consist of not. less than three persons, to act at such places s circumstances may require, and eacl; claim for reward will be referred to sucl Commission, as may be considered the most convenient for its proper investigation. The acts of the majority will be deemed the acts of the Commission. .
