WELLINGTON ATHENAEUM.
a vxenerai. meeting oi tne Members or this Institution took place on Tuesday eveningj the 6th inst., according to announcement, but it was very thinly attended. George Hart, Esq. occupied the chair. The following Beport of the Sub-Committee was submitted to the meeting. Considerable discussion ensued, when it was agreed to adjourn the meeting to Tuesday next, the 13th inst , in consequence .of the thin attendance of members. BEPOBT. The sub-committe appointed to consider and report upon the state and prospects of the Wel lington A'thenseum, have met and considered the subject, and now find themselves under tbe necessity of presenting the following report. The number of subscribers who bave paid their subscriptions for the current year is 24 to which must be added 33 half-yearly subscribers one of the annual subscribers being a lady, and one half-yearly a youth. The position of the Institute seems to be this. The amount already received has paid the Librarian's salary to date (or willl do so when some small outstandings are collected), and has also paid off the amount advanced by the Treasurer, leaving £2 3s. Bd. in band, against which there is a claim of £2 for Subscription to the Sydney Morning Herald. The following amounts are still due :—
The current expenditure of the Institute is 12s. 6d. per week for the Librarian's salary; about 3s. 6d. per week for lights, firing, &c. ; £9 per annum for insurance, £2 17*. 9d. for interest on money borrowed for the building, and about o>. per month as subscriptions to tbe Illustrated London Newt. No r as subscriptions bave been received for tbe period "ending June 30, 1861, it follows that tbe amount reauired for this is -. —
besides £2 for interest on debentures, against wbich there is nothing but the few half-yearly subscriptions that will (or may) be received for tbe half year from January 1 to June 30, 1861. Under these circumstances the sub-commit-tee can only recommend that the rooms be opened one night each week instead of' five as at present, and that the Librarian be paid ss. per week for his attendance. Even this will only reduce the above amount by the sum of £16, or thereabouts, leaving then au amount of £25 to be found without any apparent source from which it is- to be derived, while £9 of this amount (for the insurance) will bave to be provided by the 24th of tbe ensuing month. The sub-committee only propose that tbis. arrangement shall continue until the 30th of Juae nejtt, but tbis wiil give opportunity for the
