Itia ascertained from public and private sources that the Bufferings and privations of all engaged in active service at Taranaki are very Bevere ; that the circumstances of all the settlers of that Province who derived their means of subsistence from farms or trade, are necessarily straightened : that the women and children sent from thence to Nelson are many of them in a very destitute plight, notwithstanding all that has been done for them by the generous hospitality of the .people of Nelson, and that a general removal of the remaining women and children is announced. The Committee therefore solicit contiibutions In money and clothing — Ist. For the forces engaged, whether soldiers, militia, or volunteers. 2nd. For the refugee women and children at Nelson. The Committee hope to be able to remit an instalment of the above by tha Airedale on her return next week ; aud they intend entrusting the distribution of all funds or articles contributed to parties in Nelson and Taranaki that can be depended on for seeing them properly laid out. ' Whereas the Superintendent of Taranaki in accepting the Provincial Government's grant of stated that he meant to reserve that fund to the end of the war for tho relief of the sufferers, the Committee feel that without questioning the prudence that dictated that course, duty and charity require this community at once to come to the relief and support of all engaged in, or suffering from tho effects of the war. It is requested that contributions in money be paid either into the Union or Oriental Banks, or to any of the members of the Committee, and that bandies of warm clothing for the troops, and also of clothing for "women and children at Nelson, be sent to the care of either Messrs.
