'The ship •' Robert Small," Captain Darke, from tiondon, via Lyttelton, arrived in this harbour on Tuesday afternoon last. She Bailed from London od the 7th, and the Downs on the 10th October; , 'encountered very heavy gales of wind in the Bay of Biscay, which considerably retarded the voyage at the outset. The line was crossed on the 17th "Nov., in 26° W. long., and from that tims to the end of the year, when the ship had reached long. 100 «E., only very light winds were experienced. The meridian of the Cap 9 was passed on the I.Bth Dec. Towards the end of the voyage very heavy gates and severe weather were fallen in with ; the ffa&es were sighted on Tuesday the 24th ult., v -aha^Lyttelton harbour was made on the following Sunday. On the voyage several ship were passed, butsignals-wereexchangedwith only a few. Inlong: 117 S E. lat. 46 © 30' S. spoke the " Wild Duck," bound for Wellington, from England 24th 'Oct.; an hearty. Saw several whalers on the S.E. • 'coast of this island ; among which was the " Jireh Swift," of New Bedford, whose Captain, William • Earl, came on board the "Robert Small," on the :25th January, and forwarded some letters home. The " Jireh Swift had sprung her bowsprit in (the gale of the two days previous, and carried away her jibboomi and lost two whales to which ahe was fast at the time. Exchanged signal also with the U.S. whaler " Gayhead/ T of New Bed* fond. The " Robert Small" remained at Lyttelton four days, and landed about 140 passengers, in- ' eluding 14 navvies, for the railway, with their ( tools, materials and houses. She left Lyttelton on, 'Frißay, the Srd-inst., and experienced N.E. and N.W.* winds .the the whole .way up. The -"Robert Small" is one of Messrs. Willis, Gann, : «*<fc <3o;'a;liaers, has brought a large cargo for, this, place, and is consigned ~to Messrs, Be'thu,ne . and Hunter. Captain Darkjj, and the surgeon, A. S>. Park, Esq., w^ire both presented with complimentary testimonials by the passeng&ts on their arrival at Lyttelton, for their uniform kindness and attention to them during the voyage. She is advertised to load wool for London direct ; to follow the " Zealandia."
