THE WAIRARAPA

Wβ have been requested to publish the following Memorial relative to the hold-

ing of District Courts in the Wiararapa. To His Excellekct, . Colonel Goas Brow*, C. 8., Goversob of- New Zealaxd. The Memorial of the undersigned Settlers of the District of the Wairarapa in the Province of Wellington, \ .'■ ■ . ' - Respectfully Shetceth, /;■ That a proclamation ordering Courts of Sessions of the Peace and Courts under the Resident Magistrates' Extension of Jurisdiction Act 1856, to be held in the District of Wairarapa, was issued the month of June, 1857.

That Charles. Dudley Robert Ward Barrister at Law, was appointed the Chairman of such Courts. ; .

That seen Courts were duly organised and held by the said Chairman. at Greytuwn. 55 miles from. Wellington, and proved of the greatest .benefit .to the Settlers and Natives of Wairarapa.

That the Sessions of the Peace Ordinance and Resident Magistrates Extension of Jurisdiction Act were repealed by the District Courts Actof 1858. ' ■

That your Memorialists are informed that His Honor the Superintendent of Wellington has' recommended that the said District Couits Act sbould be immediately brought into operation within the entire Province of Wellington, and that District Courts should be held four times a yeantvithin the District of'Wairarapa. : i ! That your Memorialist hoped and expected I that Mr. Ward would have been appointed Dis- ! trict Csnrt Judge,as liebad acquired the respect and confidence both'of Europeans and Natives resident in Wairarapa, and your Memorialists cannot refrain from taking the present opportunity of respectfully expressing to Your fixeellency their .opinion; that a great injustice has been done to Jlr. Ward, if, as is currently reported, the Office has been offered to,another person. That your Memorialists are iuformed that it is not the intention of Your Excellency to direct District Courts to be held in the Wairarapa. That if such intention' be carried into effect, Your Memorialists will be deprived of theit only, local Court and willi consequently be compelled to resort to' Wellington iv every case which, would virtually amount to a defeat of Justice. •, ,-i ■•' ■...:.. That Your Memorialists believe the District oftbe Wairaiapa contains more Settlers, than ~ the'new Province of;lJawke's Bay. . ; Your Memorialists; "-therefore, earnestly request that' Your Excellency will.be pleased!&>■ I take the Memorial jnto consideration rand .to i make it imperative" on tlu- peisou appointed District Court Judge, to hold Courts fmir times' a year at Grcytoiun, and Youi Memorialists" do most confidently trust thai the statement of their case now laid before your Excellency..will excuse tliem from ~such,,intolerable.-,hardships and injustice as would arise fiiim the appoint-;, ment of any person who in-.iy lie cither unablei or unwilling, to undergo the labour and fatigueof travelling through a District like, the Wairarapa. , ,\ . .'■;, ' . .
