Local Intelligence.

Fatat, Accident.—lnformation reached town on Sunday afternoon, of v most distressing and fatal accident which occurred at Kangitikei on Thursday laut, viz., the death, while bathing, of a young man named George Heading. Mr. Heading has been for some months past rt;sidcut at Mr. Pox's slalioD, and on Thursday evening went down to the river for the purpose of bathing. His not returning occasioned no surprise as bo generally walked into VVangnnui, once a week, to see some friends there. Not making his appearance next day, some alarm

was felt and one of the neighbours went down to the river, and on enquiring of some natives found that be had not crossed on the evening previously. On proceeding some little distance along the bank, the clothes of tbe deceased were discovered by the side of a pool, guarded by his dog. Assistance was obtained from tbe natives and the body spec.lily found. It is supposed that being heated 'by his walk he'vas seized with cramp. Deceased was a promising'youog man of about 22, the son of Mr. Read ng of Karoii, and universally beloved by the many who knew him. This "sad accident has cast a gloom over the little village of Karori, where the deceased had lived almost from a child.

The Synod. Bishop of New Zealand arrived in town on Monday, and the Synod of the Church of England will commence its sittiwg-s to-morrow afternoon in the Provincial Council Chamber, which has been lent for the purpose; the only other suitable room, that of the Athenaeum, not being allowed by the tonus of the Crown Graut to be used for religious purposes. Wiould the White Swan not have arrived by Thursday, with the delegates from Otago and Canterbury, the Synod will be postponed till the day following. About 30 delegates, lay and clerical, are expected to he present. Wbsleyan Conference.—Elsewhere will be found a condensed report of the Annual Conference of this Society, just held at Sydney. To the deliberations of this body our Wesleyae readers look with interest, which will sufficiently justify the large space in our columns which it occupies. The fpur young Ministers therein alluded to, as about to be stationed in New Zealand, arrived at Auckland recently aDd of them, the Rev. Mr.. House, has been- tempo-!! rarily stationed in Wellington for the last few weeks. . . ~'.,.,

Accident.—On Monday morning, as two children belonging to Mr. Scott, baker, were playing near the breastwork opposite their father's house, one of them fell, over and would probably have been drowned, had not.Mr. Hamley, who was parsing at the time, immediately plunged in and rescued it. Wβ have had several opportunities of recording Mr. Hamley's bravery in rescuing property from fire, and it is rather singular, that on the eve of that gentleman's departure for Auckland, we should have to record his successful exertions in saving life from destruction by water. The Rangiiikei Mubdeh.—The prisoner Osteerj, has been again examined, but is remanded until Monday. His trial will not consequently come before the Supreme Court this sitting. Coboxer's Lnqcest. —On Monday evening an inquest was held on the body— Maclacblan, a seaman belonging to the Maraquita. His body was picked up on Sunday evening, and deceased is supposed to have fallen off the wharf, into the water. The inquest was adjourned till to-morrow to obtain further information as to where he had been during the whole of Sunday.
