A larger amount of business has been transacted during ihe pist week both privately and by publio sales, than was, we belijve, generally anticipated. The Auctions that hove taken pace have been not only fully ai tended but a considerable amount otbone fide sales have been effected. The greater caution supposed by some to be exercised recenlly by our two Banks, and the actual Blieration of the rate of discount from 8 10 10 p3r cent ou Bills having more than 05 days to run, we are happy to find does not seriously interfere with business. It seems odd that this day, whilst we hear from Kngland of a reduction of the rate of discount to 2| per cent, and of money being abundant there and in Australia, we should have to notice an advance being made here. Our readers here and elsewhere can draw therefrom their own inferences. There is little question we understand, but, that lately considerable sums have been expended iv the purchase of laud, but we are generally assured that at ihe present moment there is but very little of anythirg like accomodation pnper iv circuliition amongst people engaged-in Trade. And at the same time the price of wool seems to have ma"c a permanent and Inrge advance, besides, ihe prices of Flour. Timber and other produce are good, with a steady increasing demand from the other ports.
By the Boomerang, on the 18th Inst., we have had London letters of 17th December, only 00 days occupied iv coming from London to Wellington is very good, ere long via Panama &c, we expect it in 10 days less time. The steamer Prince Alfred, 1000 tous, is expected from SyJuey to diy. The While Swan, leaves To morrow with the Southern Mails, and our own Wellington steamer the Wonga Wonga lakes her departure with tbe Napier mails on Monday. An important and influential meeting has been held daring ihe week of persons, interested in the erection of a " Wharf at the head of the Buy," with sufficient accomodation and depth of water to allow the largest vessels to discharge and load alongside. Ii gives us pleasure to add that there is every probability of something really being nt length done in ibis very desirable undertaking. Below we append a notice of the Auction sales and the prices obtained at them.
