Immediately after the above, the Superintending Committee met, and' 'resolved— That.the following gentlemen be the Trustees of tlie Saving*-' Bunk for the ensuing year— : Kenneth llethune. Another year has been added to the history of tbe suttlement, to-day being the IJth .anniversary of the arrival, of the first settlers. ft does not seem hoyvever to-be ushered inwitb that spirit nor yet with that hilarity of feeling yvbich lias hitherto marked and characterised its annual return.' Why the same preparations have not been made on this, us on former occasions, we cannot understand ; or whether the blame is to be attributed to the Treasurer,; the Secre-. .tnry, the Committee, or the public. Why the Committee appointed at a public meeting failed in supporting Captain Ilhodes, we do not knoyv; but yve think that, after that gentleman had resigned his trust, the Committee ought either to have followed his example, or carried out the necessary arrangements, and not to have allowed the public to be deceived by an appearance of support on their part, which prevented: those from acting yvho would have carried out the affair as it. had been done on former occasions. We are exceedingly sorry that such an event should have occurred as the non-celebra-tion of the Anniversary of the settlement, as it lias beeu generally considered a fraternal meeting day fir the yvhole community. Certain it .is, that great apathy or neglect exists...somewhere...
