THE "Wellington Independent." Saturday, August 10, 1850.

The barque Fairy Queen,,Ca,\)t. Doyle, arrived in port, on Thursday last, from London via Auckland, after a., passage of eight days from the latter port. By her we have received Auckland papers to the 3rd of August, copious extracts from which -will be found in this day's issue.

We understand that a schooner has been e'hartered by Lieuit-Goveraor Enderby to proceed to the Auckland Islands with supplies. His Excellency appears to be a most enterprizing and energetic person, and we have not the least doubt that success will attend his operations. We believe he is anxious that a trade sheuM be commenced between Wellington and his seat of Government, being assured that it would be equally beneficial to both settlements. His Excellency returns to the Auckland [islands on Monday next, and >not to Sydney as has been stated, alter his yacht has undergone, some repairs, which she requires, having met with severe weather on her passage to this plaoe. The Auckland is an exceedingly pretty little craft, and sails remarkably fast.

Two vessels have been built by the Company's nrtizen, which were nearly, completed, and shortly to bo.launched.

A person had been dispatched to Sydney for supplies previous to his Excellency's departure for this place, and is expected back by the time the Auckland returns..

Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institutk. —A Special General Meeting O f the Members of tho above Institution took place on Wednesday evening last' in their Hall, for the purpose of electing a Librarian in the place of Mr. BushelF who has resigned, and for transacting other business of importance. There was a large attendance of members present. Vice President Lyon occupied the chair. Mr. Norgrove, (who has been acting -pro. (em. during the illness of Mr. Bushell, and who has been very attentive to his duties,) was unanimously elected Librarian. Several additions and alterations to the-Laws of the Institute were then submitted by the Secretary, which were carried unanimously, and amongst the rest, " that all the officers be elected by ballot " Two vacancies having taken place in the Committee, one by the retirement of Mr. E. J. Smith, aud the other by the election of Mr. i\'orgrove as Librarian, this law was brought into requisition directly after it passed. Mr. Roberts and Mr. Woodward were the isvo candidates elected to fill vacant offices. The ballot went off extremely well, there being no confusion, and very little time was occupied by it.

Birth—On the 13th inst., at Wellington, the wife of Robsrt Waitt, Esq., of a daughter.
