THE "Wellington Independent." Wednesday, August 14, 1850.
The melancholy accident winch has vjust occurred at the Wairarapa is a new instance of the improvidence of our spend-; thrift Government, and its total disregard of whatever concerns the welfare of the settlers. Repeatedly has its attention been called to the want of ferries in this province, and the frequent deaths which "have occurred for want of them. Yet while-it spends our revenue in maintaining a host of useless officials, not one of whom if sunk to the bottom of the sea the public would ever miss, it leaves the safety of the working colonists unprovided .for. This is not the first accident that' has occurred at the same spot, nor could the Local Government, ignorant as it is, be ignorant of the clanger. Truly the blood of the deceased may be laid at its door. But what cares it. The official host, whose name is Legion, continues to feed fat on the funds which ought to support ferries, roads, bridges, gaols, schools, and-other,' works. So long as they pocket their pay, all is well. It matters little if now and then the life of a settler is forfeited as the'result. It all goes in the diminution; of the number of the white population/ and adds'tothe plausibility of Sir George Grey's excuses for postponing Self-Go-vernment (in account of the small number of Europeans.
