in Hungary, noilecided blow"had"beeir Austrian and Russian armies, to_sie number of three hundred thousand men. were in the field, and in one or two trfliug engagements, the victory had still sided with the Hungarians. Overwhelming as the allied force seems in numbers, it is by no means certain that the task before it is an easy one, and though in the end the brave Hungarians may. be compelled to succumb, the struggle maybe a fierce and a prolonged one. On the Continent, the affairs of Rome and Hungary were those of the greatest immediate importance. Gen. Oudinot had for two months been fruitlessly laying seige to Rome, which had always .been considered an open city, but it was evident that, for several- reasons, the French General was unwilling to proceed to extremities, 'or he might eertairily have compelled it to surrender. At length, on the 30th June, the Roman, determined to abandon further defence, and tbe French accordingly took possession "of the city. What course the French. Government will take is not clearly known, but it is expected by Bomethat- it*will suffer the Romans t> establish a,really, popular Government, and then protect it against foreigu aggression.
. The.half-yearly meeting of the memhers of;the Mechanics' Institute was held on Monday rooms, Kumu Toto Street, W. Lyon, JEsq., in the chair". We have not rooni for the report this Jveek.
His Excellency the Lieut.-Governor, Accompanied by several gentlemen and ■seven natives, proceeded on Monday in ■the Carbonto Wairau. It is Mr. Eyre's intention to endeavour to penetrate from Kaparatehau. to Port Cooper, through the interior; and from the open character •ot the country at the? rear of the Kai Kora range, we make -ho doubt of his fuecess. In fact it is asserted that with aotne little difficulty a dray may be driven from Wairau to the Port Cooper plains.
