We' quote the following interesting but doubtful intelligence from the Straits Times of 16th July:—"lt will be extremely gratifying to our readers to learn that the long-pending negotiations between the Government and the Australian Royal Steam Navigation Company have at length terminated. The contract for the monthly conveyance of mails from Singapore to Sydney will commence from the Ist day of September next. The sum fixed for conveying her Majesty's mails is £26,000 per annum, which amount will probably be increased with an additional £8,000 from the Nether lands India government, for conveying the mails from Batavia and Singapore, and vice verse. The demand of the colonists at the Mauritius has been met by the English government establishing a monthly mail communication between that island and Ceylon."
