LATEST FROM CHINA.
Surrender of Chpsan.—The news from China, via Singapore and South Australia, which we extract from the Melbourne Argus of the 27ih ult., extends to thu middle of July.
A proclamation had been issued at Hongkong, on tho lßih May, to the effect that consequent to the Emperor having admitted, under his own hand, the right of the English to enter Can on, the exurciie of that right would be postponed (ill the Canion population were more under the con trol of ihe local government, and that, Chusan would be immediately given up. Accordingly, ih. , island was surrendered on the sth July, but the British troops were retained till the Mandarins could establish authority. General D'Aguillar was officiating at Victoria, Hongkong, for Sir John Davis, pro tern., while the latter was at Chusan, surrendering it to the Chinese. Very serious riots had taken place at Canton on the Bth Juno, the mob having attacked the factories. The inmates, several of whom were wouuded, were obliged to fire in self defence, when 13 were killed, or died of their wounds, and twenty were more or less wounded. Captain Stein Bille,oftho D.nish fdgato Galathea, which was then lying at Whampoa, promptly sent up men, as did also the m reliant vessel?.
