To the Editor op the " Wellington Independent." Sir, —About tea days ago the signal for s Steamer was hoisted on the Signal Suff at Mount Albert. Every settler was pleased, as a matter of coursf, believing that his Excellency Captain Grey was oa board, when, \o and'behold, the signal was lowered. The Inhabitants were greatly disappoint, ed; but will you believe, Mr. Editor, that their feelings were tempered with, that taking advantage of the anxiety naturally felt by the settlers for the presence of the Governor, and the temporary absence of the look out man from the etaflF, a person calling himself a gentleman did, for what he chooses to term a lark, hoist the signal fo» a steamei ! I furnish you with the name of the party who was guilty of this freak, and also with the name of one who was present at the time, and has since been grinning at the gull.bility of the public. You ought to show them up, anH let the settlers know the kind of interest token in their welfare by one who can put himself foiward fast enough when the object to be gained is to injure the Government Officers. I am, Sir, Ycmr's, &c, J.
