LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The Catherine Ann, a cutt°r of about 18 tons, built on the Hutt by Mr. Williams, & purchased by Mr. Cemino, canifc over to this 'Bide on Monday last. She is strongly built and well put together, and will prove a great acquisition to the coasting vessels belonging to this harbour.
On the cbmpletion of the winch is in course of erection at Karori, the Militia will be employed in repairing and widening the present line of road-receiving the extra pay usually obtained by the mi itary for such increase of labour when employed on public work.
We understand that a Company is in process of formation under the style and title of the Massacre Bay Coal Company. The scarcity of wood for fuel, and the great demand of coal for the use of the Government steamers, will no doubt cause the company to tiecome a highly lucrative me. We trust that this attempt to prevent importation, whether for the use of the Government or the colonists, will meet wi h proper encouragement from all classes of the community.
Early on Monday morning, a party Of fourteen natives, wi'h fish, arrived from Ohariu. The Militia, not liking their appearance, watched them till daylight, and to the early hour, were neatly on the point of creating an nlitai.
The s-hnoncr Robert Burns, chartered by Mr. Yule, at Auckland, arrived in port on Monday night, from the East Coast, with a car_>o uf Colonial produce. She brings the distressing intelligence of the total loss of the schooner Uncle Sam, on a dangerous reef in Hawkes Bay, near Mr. Ellis' fishery. We are happy to say that the crew at d passengers were saved, but the cargo was entirely lost. This loss is more to he regreltid, in as much as the Uncle Sam had on board despatches for l>is Excellency Captain Grey, relative to the attack on the Mutt post, and the present alarming state of this netilement The despatches and mails likewise went to the bottom, so that there is no possibility for the present of the Governor bu>g apprised of ihe state of affairs here. We hear that Ensign Symonds proceeds to-day in the Government brig for Auckland, with duplicate despatches tor his Excellency. This will probably be the first intimation his Excellency will receive of the recent cv nts in the Hutt, as the harbour of Kaipara, is dangerous to and the road from it to Auckland is difficult Two humpback whales had been captared at Mr. Ellis* station, and two humpJack whales at the stations belonging to Mr. Perry. On Friday week last, a steamer was seen from two different points on the Ea*t standing off as if bound for Akaroa
