PUBLIC MEETING.
Two Public Meetings were held yesterday e«ning* in the Britannia Saloon and the Aurora IW*, on two different subjects. The fmt meeting * took place at seven o'clock, arid was called bj vertisement for the purpose cf considering 5 * priety of voting an address to his Grey, on his assuming the reins of po* er >'" i Zealand. M ■ ,' s> Curpenter und Roote addressed the ti is in favour ot" the amendment, and advocated that a description of the grievances of the working flowing mainly from one dr tivo causes, hould'also be embodied in the address presented A M'Donald, Esq , banker, objected , to the pro08 ed address, on the following just grounds—that the meeting, 'in passing tne address, would be in some measure stultifying themselves, since they had rot received any intimation yet of his Excel lency's intention to visit , this place. Then again, Captain Grey mifeht be exercising his functions at Auckland, adverse to the interests of the settlers in the Straits, and it would seem strange'indeed if the inhabitants here congratulated his Excellency one moment, and then had occasion to oppose tiim the ne xt. Let the Governor 'fint arrive, and thr'n it will be time en6ugh to prepare an address, when something more was known of his Excellency. Major Baker then proposed a aecohd ame"hdment, which Was seconded by A. M Donald, Esq.. (Union Bank,) to the effect that it whs inexpedient to pass an eddrfss to Captain Gi\;y, until his Exi celency's arrivtl in Wellington.*' On the chairman putting the last amendment, it was declared caVried by a hrge 'm.joriiy. A vote of thanks was passed to the chafnnan fur his able conduct in the chair, and then the meeting adjourned to the long ro m in the Aurora Tavern.
