To the Editor of the Wellington Independent.

Sir, —Can you tell me why the Dog Nuisance Ordinance is allowed to become a dead letter? Are the authorities unacquainted with the fact that several of the settlers keep large ferocious dogs, allowing them to roam about, to the manifest danger of the wives and families of the .settlers? Such parties cannot be too severely censured or punished, for no one can consider his. legs safe when such dangerous beasts are permitted to be at large. I will instance one person who keeps two brutes, which are a public nuisance. It is Mr. Eagar of Willis-street. I could name several other ..parties, but these dogs are the worst in the whole -town. If the authorities will not do their duty, trey must expect the inhabitants to right themselves, and to get rid of, in the best way they can, of these public nuisances. I should advise all parties who are obliged to be out at night to take fire-arms with them, and shoot all beloved pets of Dog Fanciers, that come flying at them. If something of the kind was done, the evil would soon be remedied, for the Magistrates would then feel themselves compelled to order the constables to destroy animals that endanger the public safety. The cause of these dogs infesting the town is that they are seldom fed by their charitable owners. If parties cannot, or will not, feed their dogs, they ought not to keep them for to pounce on the legs of unwary passengers. I remain, Sir, Your's, fee, Pro bono Publico. August 4,1845.
