ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE

To the Editor of the Wellington Independent,

SiR,--Referring to your article of as to the shocking state of the road alone tli * beach, I am surprised at your imposing 011 th storekeepers and residents the right of renair ' ing the same. Who ever heard of pri vat * residents any where or in any community bein» obliged to keep the roads in repair ? H a d yon reminded our Police Magistrate that the saol gang was at his disposal, or his Honor our Superintendant, that there -were scores of ooor labouring men unemployed, who would find such employment very beneficial to their poor starving families, I think the hint would have been given in the right quarter. But, if the right f all rests oa private individuals, the carters of Wellington are the parties who should each give a day, or say two days work, in drawing shingles from the beach and depositing it in the worst places. They are the parties who cut the roads up, and in justice they are the parties who ought to repair it. I remain, Sir, &c, A Storekeeper. P.S.—While on this subject, I would brine under your notice the great annoyance caused by horsemen galloping along the beach, and not only covering the fronts of houses, but splashing passengers who are passing with mudone in particular, the Meat Company's flying butcher. Surely the authorities ought to put a stop to this nuisance, if they will uot mend the roads.
