Mr. Percival Berry has resigned the office of Police Magistrate at Auckland, and Mr. Beckham, late of Kororarika, has been appointed his successor. It is said that Mr. Berry resigned because his Excellency Captain Fitzroy requested him. not to admit Mr. Waitford to bail, the offence with which Mr. Waitford was charged being a bailable offence. Mr. Berry is said to have declined the. responsibily attempted to be forced upon him by the Governor, and-so he retired. Mr. Beckham refused to bail Mr. "Waitford, and so carried out his Excellency's instructions.
